Augusta Kibassa, Minister of Telecommunications of the DR Congo, was in France last week. Kibassa visited Thales Alenia Space, a French firm that makes satellites, on November 14. There, he met with the firm’s senior management and learned about the different stages of satellite production, from design to launch.
This visit follows the signing of two memorandums of understanding: one between the DRC and satellite operator Monacosat, and another with Poland. These initiatives are part of the Congolese government's efforts to develop the country's satellite capabilities to meet the growing need for communication and technology, even in remote areas.
While the Ministry of Telecommunications shared no specific details about the purpose of Kibassa's visit, it may aim to address some past concerns regarding territorial surveillance. In 2022, the Congolese government showed interest in acquiring a $100 million Earth observation satellite, with its own funds. The Ministry of Scientific Research and Technological Innovation launched a tender in November in this framework.
Satellites are becoming essential technology for both telecommunications and Earth observation. In the DRC, they could help address security and economic challenges. They may also assist in securing borders against rebel groups, identifying areas affected by natural disasters, combating illegal mining activities, and assessing the state of important infrastructure in the country.
