The road-rail-bridge project to connect Brazzaville, in Congo, to Kinsasha, in the DR Congo (DRC), could kick off by the end of 2025. Alexis Gisaro, DRC’s Minister of Public Works, issued this statement on November 7, while meeting with Denis Sassou N’Guesso, President of Congo Brazzaville.
"We have given instructions that from January onwards, a very clear timetable will be deployed, and we will ensure effective follow-up. Necessary studies and related negotiations have already been carried out to ensure that the first stone is laid within a year,” Gisaro declared.
This road-rail-bridge project is part of a larger effort to improve regional integration under the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) will oversee the project. The feasibility studies for the project were funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and both governments concerned.
Originally proposed in the 1990s, the project involves building a 1.575 km toll bridge over the Congo River. It will include a railway, two road lanes, sidewalks, and border control posts on both sides.
The infrastructure should enhance mobility and trade between Kinshasa and Brazzaville, which are currently connected only by river. It will also be an important part of the Tripoli-Windhoek transport corridor, which passes through Chad, Cameroon, DR Congo, Congo Brazzaville, and Angola.
